What does coffee intensity actually mean?
Intensity is a rating, usually from 1 to 10, that describes how bold and full-bodied a coffee tastes in the cup. It reflects roast depth, body and bitterness. It is not a measure of caffeine.
Two things worth knowing:
- Intensity scales are set by each brand, so a 5 from one brand is not always the same as a 5 from another. Use it as a guide within a brand.
- A higher number does not mean more caffeine. A decaf can be bold.
